PhotonicNet, the competence network for optical technologies in Lower Saxony funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) brings together internationally renowned research institutes, universities, applied science universities and one of the world's leading manufacturers of optical technologies, as well as public institutions and banks. Thanks to its interdisciplinary structure, the network considerably improves the transfer of R&D ideas into practical applications.

PhotonicNet GmbH was founded in Hannover in 2001 to manage the competence network.

PhotonicNet GmbH and its four divisions:

• Technology management
• Start-up consulting
• Marketing and communication
• Training and advanced training

PhotonicNet's objective is to speed up the development, spread and application of optical technologies in Lower Saxony, and to maintain an adequate supply of properly qualified staff by stimulating appropriate training measures. The region covered by PhotonicNet approximately equates to the Hannover-Braunschweig-Göttingen triangle which has long been a centre of optical technologies. The enhancement of co-operation through the new network ensures that existing skills and potential are put to optimal use and that opportunities for new areas of application for optical technologies are identified and harnessed.

The supra-regional network OptecNet Deutschland e.V. was founded to achieve optimum results from the national networking initiatives and to expand the international presence of Optical Technologies ‘made in Germany’. OptecNet Deutschland is the association of the nine German Competence Networks for Optical Technologies and thus represents a powerful network focusing on the following tasks and activities:
