The automotive sector in the Hannover Region is dominated by the headquarters of Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge (VW commercial vehicles) as well as the global system suppliers Continental AG and WABCO. These companies have considerable economic power and are also significant purchasers of product and production-related goods and services.

The rubber industry also plays an exceptional role in Hannover's industrial landscape. Major rubber-processing industries such as Continental and ContiTech, Gummi-Jäger and Siegling, as well as major manufacturers of rubber production machines such as Berstorff and Troester, not to mention the Deutsches Institut für Kautschuktechnologie (DIK) (German Institute for Rubber Technology) – the only research institute of its kind in Europe – create a strong network that is amongst the worldwide leaders in rubber technology.
